OVC Announces 2013 NCVRW Theme and Colors
"New Challenges. New Solutions." is the theme for next year's National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW), which will be observed April 21-27, 2013. Download the color palette to view the poster artwork and theme colors (midnight blue and orange). (OVC)
 
OVC TTAC Spotlights Consultant Dan Hally
Dan Hally is Captain of the Asotin County (WA) Sheriff's Office. He specializes in investigating Internet crimes against children, interviewing victims of violent crimes, enhancing law enforcement officers' understanding of the trauma that victims experience, and improving law enforcement and victim assistance in Native American communities. He is also a forensic artist. (OVC)
 
Participate in Evaluation of Through-Wall Sensor Devices

NIJ is seeking manufacturers that would like to participate in an evaluation of through-wall sensor devices. The evaluation will focus on field operation in civilian law enforcement scenarios. Participation requests and letters of understanding must be submitted by October 29, 2012. (NIJ)

 
Partnership Assists Children Exposed to Violence
On September 28, 2012, in Cleveland, Ohio, Attorney General Eric Holder announced that the Department of Justice and key stakeholders will partner with the United Way's 2-1-1 "call-for-service" line to give citizens access to screening, assessment, and treatment services for children who have been victims of or witnesses to violence. Best Practices for Victimized and Traumatized Children

The Safe Start Center has released "Victimization and Trauma Experienced by Children and Youth: Implications for Legal Advocates," a 16-page brief that examines the prevalence and impact of child victimization and exposure to violence. The publication also discusses trauma-related stress symptoms and provides guidance for advancing policy to support trauma-informed practice. (OJJDP)

 
Brief Summarizes Reductions in Recidivism

"States Report Reductions in Recidivism" (NCJ 239783, 8 pp.) is a policy brief that highlights a cross-section of states reporting significant declines in recidivism rates for adults released from prison. For each state, this brief compares 3-year postrelease recidivism rates for individuals released from prison in 2005 and 2007. (BJA)

On October 24, 2012, at 2 p.m. ET, OJJDP's State Training and Technical Assistance Center will host the Webinar "DMC National Webinar Part II: What the Data and Research Tell Us." Save the Date for LGBTI Populations Broadcast

On November 7, 2012, NIC will host "LGBTI Populations - Their Safety, Your Responsibility." This live, 3-hour satellite/Internet broadcast is designed to increase awareness of strategies for developing policies and procedures for LGBTI populations. The broadcast will highlight promising practices by providing resources and examples of agencies that are responding to the needs of their LGBTI population. (NIC)

Security Training Available for Corrections Officers
"Developing a Security Audit System: You Get What You Inspect" is a hands-on security audit training program provided by NIC. After 1 day of formal classroom instruction, participants work in three teams (assisted by one of the instructors) to conduct a security audit using the guidelines provided. (NIC)
