Comments Sought on NIJ Standards and Testing

NIJ has put out a call for Standards and Testing: Requests for Comment and Information on drafts of equipment standards and guides. In this regard, requests for information are posted to gather technical information from manufacturers, criminal justice agencies, and other sources. The comment period is open through September 28, 2012. (NIJ)

 
NIC Announces Deputy Director Job Opening

NIC is conducting a nationwide search for candidates for Deputy Director. The Deputy Director will help oversee and lead the activities, programs, and operations of the Institute and provide top level assistance to the Director. OVC TTAC Asks Practitioners About TTA Needs

OVC's Training and Technical Assistance Center (TTAC) has released a needs assessment form asking practitioners to identify topical areas where they need further training and technical assistance for professional development and improved services to victims of crime. Sign Up for NCVRW Guide and Poster

National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW) will be observed April 21-27, 2013. Sign up by November 30, 2012, to receive a free copy of the 2013 NCVRW Resource Guide and theme poster. Subscribers will also receive announcements and updates regarding the 2013 NCVRW. (OVC)

 
Stop Bullying Challenge Available for Youth

OJJDP, in conjunction with the Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention, invites youth ages 13 to 18 to participate in the Stop Bullying Video Challenge. OJJDP encourages young people to submit videos demonstrating how they are taking a stand against bullying and promoting kindness and respect within their communities. The grand prize is $2,000. Submit Nominations for Crime Victims' Service Awards
Nominations are being accepted for the 2013 National Crime Victims' Service Awards. Help ensure that outstanding service providers and programs are given the recognition they deserve by submitting your nomination now. Updated award categories are: Volunteer for Victims Award and Federal Service Award. The deadline to submit nominations is Wednesday, September 5, 2012. (OVC)

Applying APEX Tools in Corrections

Current Issue of BJA Newsletter Released

The August issue of "Justice Today" discusses the recently held National Criminal Justice Association's National Forum on Criminal Justice and Public Safety. It also includes articles about the national Prison Rape Elimination Act standards, a Webcast on inmate health care costs, the Evidence-Based Policing Matrix, and a call for BJA peer reviewers. Implementing PREA in Juvenile Agencies

"Implementing The Prison Rape Elimination Act: A Toolkit for Juvenile Agencies and Facilities" (NCJ 238583, 104 pp.) is a guide for agencies and facilities that handle juvenile offenders. The toolkit offers step-by-step guidelines for preventing, detecting, and eliminating sexual abuse of residents in their custody, and for responding effectively to abuse when it does occur. (BJA)

NIJ has released the seventh issue of its "Research Report Digest." This online publication provides brief descriptions of studies in various criminal justice disciplines (such as courts, corrections, forensic sciences, and violence) along with evaluations of technologies that are used in the law enforcement and corrections fields. NIJ Waives Ordering Limits for Select Resources

NIJ is waiving ordering limits on select titles from its collection of publications, including a number of investigative guides. Publications are available for every field - law enforcement, forensics, courts, corrections, and victim service providers. All materials are free but standard shipping charges will apply. (NIJ)

 
OJJDP Releases July/August News @ a Glance

"OJJDP News @ a Glance" (NCJ 238982) highlights the U.S. Department of Justice’s 2012 National Intertribal Youth Summit. The newsletter also discusses the Supreme Court decision banning mandatory life sentences without parole for juveniles convicted of homicide, the third Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention Summit, and how OJJDP reaches out to children with deployed parents. Report Highlights Trends in Juvenile Justice Legislation

The National Conference of State Legislatures has released "Trends in Juvenile Justice State Legislation: 2001-2011." This report examines state legislative activity over the past decade on a number of juvenile justice issues, including prevention and intervention, disproportionate minority contact, reentry/aftercare, and corrections reform. BJA is offering two Webinars as part of an interagency effort to clarify expectations and progress around shared deliverables under the Tribal Law and Order Act (TLOA). "Interagency Memorandum of Agreement & Tribal Action Plans" will take place on September 12, 2012, at 2 p.m. ET. "TLOA Tribal Justice Plan: An Overview & Update on Implementation" will take place on September 19, 2012, at 3 p.m. ET. (BJA)
 
National Preparedness Month Observed in September

National Preparedness Month is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of emergency preparedness, to encourage Americans to be better prepared for emergencies, and to recognize the contributions made by our nation's first responders. The Safety and Preparedness Special Feature includes materials and resources for citizens, volunteers, and public safety and other professionals. (NCJRS)

Webinar To Examine Improving Conditions of Confinement
On September 12, 2012, at 2 p.m. ET, OJJDP's National Center for Youth in Custody will host "Creating and Sustaining Improved Conditions for Youth in Custody: Beyond the Initial External Influence." This Webinar, the first in a series, will explore reforms in conditions of confinement resulting from litigation and case law and will identify ways to make confinement consistently safer and therapeutic for youth in custody. Apply for APEX Training

NIC is seeking up to five agencies/associations from all sectors of corrections to apply for the Competition for Staff Training for Achieving Performance Excellence (APEX). The APEX initiative training includes a 1-day orientation, a 2- to 3-day training session, and virtual followup through telephone or Web-based conferences. Applications must be sent to Nancy Cebula (nancy@peopleincharge.org) by September 15, 2012. (NIC)
