New President Appointed to Police Foundation

The Police Foundation Board of Directors has appointed Jim Bueermann as its new president. Mr. Bueermann is the former chief of police in Redlands, California. His advocacy for evidence-based practice and support of researcher and practitioner partnerships has produced several key studies of crime and policing. (NIJ)

 
OJJDP Announces Missing Children's Day Poster Contest

OJJDP encourages fifth grade students to participate in the 2013 National Missing Children's Day Poster Contest. The annual contest creates an opportunity for schools, law enforcement, and other child advocates to discuss the issue of missing and exploited children with children, parents, and guardians, and to promote child safety. OVC Announces 2013 NCVRW Theme and Colors

"New Challenges. New Solutions." is the theme for next year's National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW), which will be observed April 21-27, 2013. Download the color palette to view the poster artwork and theme colors (midnight blue and orange). (OVC)

 
OVC TTAC Spotlights Consultant Jose Lara, Jr.

Jose Juan Lara, Jr., Director of Advocacy and Training for the Texas Advocacy Project, has been involved in the movement against gender violence since 1999. He has presented at national, state, and local conferences on crisis intervention, systems advocacy for victims of family and sexual violence, and LGBTQ victims. (OVC)

 
Sign Up for NCVRW Guide and Poster

National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW) will be observed April 21-27, 2013. Sign up by November 30, 2012, to receive a free copy of the 2013 NCVRW Resource Guide and theme poster. Subscribers will also receive announcements and updates regarding the 2013 NCVRW. (OVC)

As part of its Forward Promise initiative, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will fund community-based projects that strengthen health, education, and employment opportunities for boys and young men of color. Applications are due by 3 p.m. ET on October 10, 2012. (OJJDP)

Bulletin Examines Effects/Consequences of Underage Drinking

OJJDP has released "Effects and Consequences of Underage Drinking" (NCJ 237145, 12 pp.) The bulletin presents findings from a literature review that investigated how underage drinking can affect a youth’s physical, emotional, and neurological health. (OJJDP)

 
HIV/AIDS in State and Federal Prisons Detailed
"HIV in Prisons, 2001-2010" (NCJ 238877, 12 pp.) describes national trends in the rates of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), and AIDS-related death rates among state and federal prison inmates from 2001 to 2010. (BJS)
 
Report Summarizes 2012 Distribution of JAG Funds
BJS has released "Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program, 2012" (NCJ 239232, 8 pp.). This report describes the steps used in the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) formula calculation process and presents summary results of the FY 2012 formula calculations. (BJS)

New Multimedia Resource Available

NIJ has added "Meeting Survivors' Needs Through Non-Residential Domestic Violence Services and Supports: Results of a Multi-State Study" to its list of available multimedia resources. In this interview, Mary Louise Kelley, Anne Menard, and Eleanor Lyon discuss a study focused on nonresidential domestic violence services. (NIJ)

 
Statistical Briefing Book Updated

OJJDP has updated its Statistical Briefing Book (SBB) to include 2011 data on juvenile populations, 2010 data on victims of domestic violence, and FBI supplementary homicide reports through 2010. The SBB offers access to a host of juvenile justice data and information. (OJJDP)

 
Toolkit on Children's Exposure to Violence Released

OJJDP's Safe Start Center has released a toolkit to increase awareness about the prevalence of children's exposure to violence (CEV). This free online resource includes information about the subject along with links to tip sheets, guides, and other publications on CEV. (OJJDP)

 
Web Forum Discusses Latina/o Victims of Crime

On September 19, 2012, at 2 p.m. ET, OVC will conduct a Web Forum Guest Host Session on Responding to Latina/o Victims of Crime. Join Kimber J. Webinar To Address Officer Health and Safety

On September 18, 2012, at 2 p.m. ET, NIJ and the Harvard Kennedy School will host "Healthy Officers are Safer Officers: The Nexus Between Performance & Health." The Webinar will discuss some of the evidence-based practices and policies that law enforcement agencies can put into operation to reduce officer deaths and improve wellness and performance. (NIJ)

 
Webinar To Discuss Tribal Justice Plan

On September 19, 2012, at 3 p.m. ET, BJA will host "TLOA Tribal Justice Plan: An Overview & Update on Implementation." The Tribal Justice Plan is a congressionally mandated report that was developed in response to the Tribal Law and Order Act (TLOA).The Webinar will provide an overview of the plan, the work group structure, and accomplishments to date. Customized TTA applications must be submitted 135 days prior to an event in order to comply with new DOJ preapproval requirements applicable to all conferences, trainings, and meetings. Visit OVC TTAC as part of your TTA goal planning for 2013. (OVC)
