Description of Activity and Faculty Guidelines: The instructor divides students into groups of ten, and instructs each group to subdivide into two teams of five. Each group selects a policy topic (pulled from a hat), and flips a coin to see which team debates the "pros" and which one the "cons" of its policy topic. The instructor can advise students on the "con" team that playing the role of "devil's advocate" will help frame the actual debates that are occurring in states across the nation. Each group will conduct a debate with its two opposing teams, and process their opinions of the "pros" and "cons" of its policy issue.
