Chapter 15: Victimization of Individuals with Disabilities

INSTRUCTOR GUIDELINES

Key Concepts/Objectives to Emphasize in Instruction and Learning Activities:

1. Key requirements and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA). (15-9 to 15-14)
2. Why individualized responses to victims with disabilities are essential.
(15-21 to 15-22)
3. Specific techniques for working with victims with disabilities (including both
individual and agency approaches). (15-22 to 15-24)

Objective:

1. Develop agency-specific solutions to accommodate the needs of victims
with various disabilities.

Description of Activity and Faculty Guidelines:

The instructor will divide students into small groups based upon their
disciplines. Suggestions for group divisions include:

o Law enforcement and victim assistance.
o Prosecution/court and victim/witness.
o Corrections and victim assistance.
o Domestic violence and sexual assault services.
o Child Protective Services.
o Victim compensation.
o Homicide agencies and organizations.
o "Other."

Students in each group receive the worksheet that asks them to list at least two
accommodations their agencies should make to address the needs of victims
with:

o Visual impairments.
o Hearing impairments.
o Physical impairments.
o Developmental disabilities.

Following completion of the worksheets, students should remain in their small
groups, and discuss the extent to which their agencies have actually made such
accommodations.
