Chapter 19: Collaboration for Victims' Rights and Services

INSTRUCTOR GUIDELINES

Key Concepts/Objectives to Emphasize in Instruction and Learning Activities:

1. Different types of working relationships. (19-2 to 19-5)
2. Challenges to successful working relationships. (19-5 to 19-6)
3. Core elements for successful collaboration. (19-14 to 19-16)

Objectives:

1. Identify barriers to collaboration for victim services.
2. Identify potential solutions to overcome barriers to collaboration.

Description of Activity and Faculty Guidelines:

The instructor divides students into 10 groups based upon their respective
disciplines and sends the groups to areas designated with tent cards or other
visual aid:

o Law enforcement.
o Prosecution/courts and victim/witness.
o Community and institutional corrections.
o Victim compensation.
o Elderly victim assistance.
o Sexual assault victim assistance.
o Domestic violence victim assistance.
o Child abuse/neglect victim assistance.
o Homicide survivors victim assistance.
o Victims of juvenile offenders.


The instructor asks each group--based upon their personal experiences--to
identify the three major barriers to collaboration, and one potential solution to
each of the three barriers they identify. The groups will be instructed to report
back to the full group--in round robin fashion--one major barrier to
collaboration and one potential solution. The instructor can summarize themes
that emerge from the group reports.

Anticipated Amount of Time Required: 20 Minutes

o 03 minutes for group division.
o 07 minutes for small group activity.
o 10 minutes for small group reports to the full group and instructor summation.
