Chapter 3.3: Specific Justice Systems and Victims' Rights, Military Justice

INSTRUCTOR GUIDELINES

Key Concepts/Objectives to Emphasize in Instruction and Learning Activities:

1. Core components of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ),
emphasizing how offenders are charged, adjudicated and sentenced. (3.3-2 to
3.3-4)
2. Seven elements of the Department of Defense (DoD) Directive's Victims' Bill
of Rights. (3.3-5)
3. Examples of victim assistance programs in the military. (3.3-4 to 3.3-10)

Objectives:

1. Describe the basic operation of military justice and victim assistance services.
2. Apply military standards to five specific crimes.
3. Describe major differences between the military and civilian justice systems.

Description of Activity and Faculty Guidelines:

The instructor divides students into five groups; each group pulls one type of
victimization from a hat:

o Child abuse.
o Sexual assault.
o Domestic violence.
o Sexual harassment.
o Hate and bias crime.

Each group is asked to develop a brief case scenario. Utilizing the student
worksheet (copied onto five overhead transparencies), each group should:
compare the response to crime victims in the military justice system versus the
response in the civilian justice system; identify two key differences; and present
its findings to the full group.

Can Be Utilized As:

Anticipated Amount of Time Required: 15 Minutes

o 05 minutes for case development.
o 07 minutes for developing the two comparative approaches for each case
type.
o 02 minutes for each small group report back to the full group.
