New Zealand

Victims of violent crime can obtain compensation from the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC), which is a no-fault program to provide financial support for crime victims and others who suffer physical injuries from other causes.

Eligibility Requirements

Report to police. No restriction.

Filing period. No restriction.

Foreign citizen eligibility. Foreign nationals are eligible to apply.

Claimants

Victims of violent crime who suffer a physical injury or a mental injury as a result of the physical injury
   
Dependents of victims of violent crime
   
Victims of accident or other injury

Procedures

Victims of crime should telephone Victim Support at 0-800-VICTIM or call a local police station for information about how to apply. Victim Support will provide victim assistance, including assessing and advising on the best place for a victim to apply for financial assistance. All local Victim Support organizations are listed in the local telephone book.

Benefits and Award Limits

There is no maximum amount that can be awarded to a victim. Each application is considered on its own merit.

Funeral and burial costs
   
Lost wages due to serious injury
   
Loss of support for dependents of a deceased victim
   
Travel expenses
   
Court expenses

Emergency awards. Each application is considered on its own merit.

Funding sources. The program is funded from premiums paid by motorists, employers, earners, and the government.
