PROCEEDINGS ARE REPORTED FROM AN INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON TRAINING FOR HIGH-RANKING POLICE POSITIONS ATTENDED BY REPRESENTATIVES OF POLICE COLLEGES IN 42 COUNTRIES.
Abstract
THE SELECTION AND TRAINING OF STAFF FOR THE TEACHING OF COURSES FOR PROSPECTIVE HIGH-RANKING OFFICERS ARE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED FOR SOME OF THE REPRESENTED COUNTRIES. A CONSIDERATION OF THE FOUNDATIONAL CONCEPTS THAT INFORM THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUCH TRAINING IN A FEW OF THE COUNTRIES FOLLOWS. THE ASSESSMENT OF THE PERSONALITIES OF CANDIDATES FOR ADVANCED RANK AND THEIR APTITUDES FOR VARIOUS POSITIONS ARE ALSO EXAMINED, INCLUDING TREATMENT OF INVESTIGATION OF CHARACTER REFERENCES AND BACKGROUND AND THE CONDUCT OF INTERVIEWS. TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR SOME OF THE REPRESENTED COUNTRIES ARE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED FOR THE FOLLOWING AREAS OF POLICE AGENCY ACTIVITIES: CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION, DRUG ABUSE AND DRUG TRAFFICKING INVESTIGATIONS, CRIME PREVENTION, SOCIAL SCIENCE IN RELATION TO POLICE WORK, ADMINISTRATION, COMMAND (LEADERSHIP), AND PUBLIC RELATIONS. TEACHING METHODS USED IN TRAINING COURSES IN SOME OF THE COUNTRIES ARE DESCRIBED AS WELL, INCLUDING RELATIONS BETWEEN STUDENTS AND STAFF, LENGTH OF COURSES, AND COORDINATION OF TRAINING FOR ALL POLICE COLLEGES IN A GIVEN COUNTRY. TOPICS PROPOSED FOR THE NEXT SYMPOSIUM TO BE HELD IN 3 YEARS ARE LISTED. THE SYMPOSIUM AGENDA AND A LIST OF PARTICIPANTS ARE APPENDED.
