This study analyzes the characteristics of subway robbery and larceny crime incidents, arrests, and their court outcomes in New York City.
Abstract
Data came from samples of robbery and larceny subway incidents occurring in 1982 and of transit robbery arrests made in 1981 and 1982. A total of 1,523 robberies and 1,480 larcenies were reported to the Transit Police Department in the 4 selected 3-week sample periods in 1982. Larcenies occurred more often on trains than on platforms, while robberies took place more often on platforms and stairs. Larcenies were more likely to occur on weekdays, while robberies occurred most often on Fridays and Saturdays. The crimes most often took place in the afternoon and evening. Robbery victims were younger than larceny victims. Arrests occurred for nearly one-fifth of the incidents during the sample period. Robbery incidents were more likely than larcenies to involve more than one arrestee. About one-third of the defendants were 16 to 19 years old. Three-fifths of the robberies involving arrests did not involve victim injuries. Rates of indictment and conviction were higher in cases in which the victim lived in the county of the crime.
