The National School Safety Center (NSSC), established by the U.S. Departments of Justice and Education in partnership with Pepperdine University, began operating on June 1, 1984, through its national headquarters in Sacramento, Calif. The NSSC coordinates resources nationwide to reduce school crime and promote an improved school learning environment. NSSC has the following specialized sections: education and law enforcement, legal, communications, and research. The education and law enforcement staff promotes interagency cooperation and the application of exemplary school safety techniques and programs. The legal section compiles and distributes information on school safety, delinquency prevention, and criminal law. The communications section promotes NSSC goals through information dissemination that includes public service advertising campaigns. The research section compiles nationwide information on school safety, delinquency prevention techniques, truancy reduction, school crime, gangs, substance abuse, and law-related education curricula. Specific activities and accomplishments of these NSSC sections are described. Problems encountered and possible future activities are discussed.
