The first unit, presenting a history of the problem, covers individual case summaries, common characteristics of fires in correctional institutions, and the impact of the security factor. Subsequent units outline a systems approach to dealing with fires and explain five goals of a simplified fire safety system for correctional facilities: ignition control, fuel control, occupant protection, detection and suppression activities, and planning and training operations. The final unit asks students to prepare a comprehensive fire safety plan and provides guidelines to accomplish this assignment. It also addresses sources of financial and technical assistance. Each chapter provides basic information, a method for organizing the course content, class exercises, content summaries, a list of performance objectives, and a chapter review test.
