Step-by-step instructions explain how to organize a community action group to work for the prevention of alcohol, other drug, mental health, and youth problems.
Abstract
The guidelines are intended for use by people with little or no experience in organizing for community action. Organizers should include several or all of the following strategies in their prevention plans: public information, education, provision of alternatives to destructive behaviors, community organization, and development of appropriate social policies. Initial steps should include defining goals, identifying the target community, and listing the changes that are needed. Group planning should start with identifying the problem and the goals. It should continue with the development of strategies and the creation and implementation of an action plan. The action plan should be in writing and should include clearly defined and manageable tasks, responsibilities, and time lines. Group leaders can make meetings effective by having written agendas and making sure that all members take part. Planning social activities, using special speakers, and dividing and reorganizing tasks are ways to increase a group's productivity. Guidelines for leaders and annotated list of 29 references.
