This directory lists and describes prison and community resources for current and former inmates of Federal, State, county, and city correctional institutions in California.
Abstract
This directory, compiled and written by an inmate, categorizes the resources according to whether they are available in prison, in the community upon release, or both. Addresses and some phone numbers for the resources are provided, followed by a descriptive summary of each resource and any cost for its use. Resources in prison include advocacy and assistance organizations, an artists group, books and cassettes, correspondence courses, 'pen pal' correspondence, legal assistance, religious services, prerelease programs, veterans services, and writing competitions. Resources available both in the community and in prison include Christian organizations serving offenders and ex-offenders, community nonprofit agencies, and visiting advocacy and assistance. The 52 types of resources listed for the community encompass such services as alcohol abuse programs, academic education, employment services, crisis hotlines, food, clothing, shelter, medical services, employment services, and legal assistance.
