Ohio law has a specific offense of domestic violence that is a first-offense, first-degree misdemeanor and a fourth-degree felony when repeated. A law requires local police to keep separate records of domestic dispute and domestic violence incidents, with monthly reports of such incidents sent to the superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation. The superintendent compiles the data in an annual statistical public report. The officer's report for each domestic incident provides information on the name and location of the call, whether or not a complaint was filed and the law under which a complaint was filed, the victim's and complainant's relationship to the offender, and action taken by the officer. The monthly data report on domestic incidents covers the number of such calls, the number of complaints brought under various laws, the number in which complaints were not filed, the victims' and complainants' relationships to offenders, and the number of incidents in which various officer actions were taken.
