The sentencing principles of the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division) are supposed to provide guidance for sentencers at all levels yet their relevance misunderstanding of sentencing principles by magistrates. Various proposals for reform are assessed in the light of these findings and some alternatives suggested. (Author abstract)
