Management initiatives include organizational improvements and the coordination of Federal efforts, increased resource commitments, and improved intelligence capability. The organizational improvement features the establishment of the National Drug Enforcement Policy Board, which sets policy and coordinates Federal drug law enforcement. One of the major coordination improvements was the creation of a network of 13 regional organized crime drug enforcement task forces to implement interagency investigations of drug organizations. Accomplishments include increased interagency coordination of law enforcement efforts to produce an increase in the number of cases initiated, indictments, and convictions. Seizures and forfeitures of drug-related assets have also increased. Regarding future plans, the Drug Policy Board is finalizing the 1986-87 drug law enforcement strategy and is reviewing a staff study of the law enforcement needs of the Nation's southeast border. The President has sent Congress a comprehensive legislative package designed to reduce drug demands through prevention and education, increase penalties for drug trafficking, enhance drug treatment programs, and remove impediments to public-private cooperation in the war on drugs.
