The NDEPB, established under the National Narcotics Act of 1984, is charged with coordinating U.S. policy and operations in national and international drug law enforcement. The board's work is implemented through a coordinating group and an interagency staff that includes representatives from all participating agencies and departments on a permanent or consulting basis. During the past 9 months, board activities have included a field study of air and related marine interdiction capabilities along the southeast border, the convening of interagency working meetings to consider recent omnibus drug legislative proposals, a review of drug problems developing along the southwest border, and the convening of a meeting on narcotics enforcement cooperation with Mexico. Other board activities since its inception in 1984 were approval of an interagency system for collecting and processing drug seizure statistics, an evaluation of the Federal effort to eradicate domestic cannabis, and a report to Congress on information-sharing agreements among Federal agencies and departments involved in drug law enforcement. Overall Federal drug law enforcement achievements have been in the areas of interdiction, investigation and prosecution, domestic cannabis eradication, and international drug control.
