In the following article a descriptive report is given on the Glen Mills School, an innovative institution in the field of juvenile corrections.
Abstract
Since 1975 it has employed such concepts as an open-system, normative culture, guided group interaction, and has witnessed very positive results from its innovations. Evidence for the effectiveness of the program takes several forms, of which two are discussed in the present article. The author presents data which had been collected as part of his dissertation which shows that the students at Glen Mills develop very positive attitudes towards the authority figures at the institution. The second source of evidence is comprised of the results of a 5-year study sponsored by Glen Mills in order to assess the status of former students 3 years after their release from the program. Preliminary results for former students of the Glen Mills Project are far below rates of other juvenile correctional institutions. Results of this research also show impressive rates of employment among former students, and that these students relate an overwhelmingly positive attitude about their stay during the program. It is the hope of the author that such an article will provide those in the field of juvenile corrections an awareness of the success experienced with the Glen Mills Project such that other such institutions will be inspired to learn from it.
