The discussion focuses on the paraphiliac exhibitionist for whom exposure is the preferred or exclusive means of achieving sexual gratification. Contemporary conceptualizations of exhibitionism are reviewed according to psychodynamic, behavioral, and biological models. Treatment methods espoused by each model are described. Particular attention is given to treatment with two classes of drugs -- neuroleptics and antiandrogens -- which have largely replaced the use of estrogens, surgical castration, and neurosurgical procedures in Europe and Canada. An overview of criminal sanctions covers statutory penalties for indecent exposure, sexual psychopath statutes, the insanity defense for exhibitionism, and the mechanics of providing treatment for convicted exhibitionists. 131 references.
