The majority of the 35 studies examined used a multifaceted approach to treatment. Family involvement was incorporated by 10 studies, individualized remediation of basic skills by 11, vocational planning and preparation by 11, socialization skills training by 31, and creative therapy by 5 studies. Crisis intervention services were offered by 17. Health care was significantly used by three and minimally by three; the remainder made no mention of health care. Followup services were offered in nine of the studies, nine had followup only related to data collection, and the remainder made no mention of followup. The importance of individualization was emphasized by 27 of the studies; the need for competent, well-trained, and sensitive personnel was stressed by 27. Among the programs offered were residential, family, school, and wilderness or camping programs. While all the treatment methods demonstrated some level of success, a more holistic approach is desirable in which programs include many, if not all, of the treatment elements discussed. 1 table and 34 references.
