This meeting focused on the special training needs of the female offender.
Abstract
Opening comments and welcoming remarks discussed the activities of the Corrections Education Program during 1984-1985 and the continued development of the Correctional Education Association Administrative Network. A presentation outlined the goals of the US Department of Education's Adult Literacy Initiative and its application in corrections education. A workshop on the special needs of female offenders profiled this population and reviewed available programs and services. Task group activities formulated planning strategies and developed action plans for meeting female offender needs in the basic areas of family, substance abuse, emotional problems, interpersonal relationships, and medical and physical problems. Action plans also suggested strategies for increasing offenders' basic education and vocational skills through appropriate curricula and staff selection and training. Finally, State directors made recommendations for future research projects in such areas as special education, occupational training, organizational models, and program evaluation. Appendixes include forms and worksheets used during the conference, and papers used in presentations on female offender needs and working with emotionally disturbed female offenders.
