The terms 'child molester,' 'pedophile,' and slang street terms are defined, and fallacies about child sexual abuse are categorized into three groups: those about the offense, about the offender, and about the victim. Child victimization and victim profile characteristics and observable victim symptoms are described. The application of an offender typology, created for law enforcement officers, is discussed in relation to characteristics that may be observed and in reference to the types of evidence that may be found during an investigation. An analysis of child molesters' criminal methods shows investigators the types of investigative questions to ask.
