This monograph instructs persons in how to prepare for evaluations of applicants seeking entry level positions as police officers and dispatchers.
Abstract
The first step is to become familiar with the job announcement and other sources of information about the job being sought, paying particular attention to the job qualifications. The next step is to obtain and complete the pre-employment application. This guide details how to complete a typical police entry-level application. The third step involves preparation for any pre-employment written exam. This includes obtaining information on the jurisdiction's elected officials and top police officials as well as the size and organization of the government and the police agency. The library may contain the public service examination series. This guide instructs the applicant in how to take a timed, multiple-choice exam. The final step is appearance before an oral board. Preparation instructions cover appearance, what to take to the interview, the likely composition of the board, the board's preparation for the interview, questions likely to be asked by the board, and recommended answers. Some characteristics an evaluator looks for in an applicant are listed, followed by information on how applicants are informed about their rating scores. Appended samples of recorded interviews, including a sample dispatch interview.
