This article identifies criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of sexual abuse prevention education for children and suggests planning steps that will increase the likelihood of program success.
Abstract
Program success must be measured by the total effect of the intervention, including both anticipated and unanticipated results. The program must have clear goals and objectives and must be taught in adherence to the prescribed content and process. Program effectiveness should be measured by changes in children's knowledge, attitudes, and skills directly attributable to the program. Persons experienced in sexual abuse prevention education for children have identified a number of 'success check points' in planning such a program. They include identifying motivated leaders, proceeding according to a proven planning process, maximizing community awareness, and nurturing interagency support and involvement. Other key planning aspects are involving the schools, having well-trained presenters, adapting materials to local needs, seeking parental endorsement and involvement, and developing a long-term plan. 7 notes.
