Following a historical review of the origins and development of security in England and America, necessary education and training and career opportunities in the field of loss prevention are described. Types of security services (e.g., guard, consulting, investigative) are explained, and the organizational role of the security department is defined. Legal issues in security are examined including the sources and types of power granted security personnel, the limits of power, and legal liability. Guidelines are provided for conducting threat assessments and security surveys. Internal and external security precautions are described, including building and perimeter defenses (barriers, lighting, and surveillance) and intrusion and access control (doors and windows, traffic control, alarms systems). Fire protection, safety, and emergency planning also are addressed. Internal theft controls are discussed in relation to management and personnel policies, procedural controls, and investigation and charging. Additional chapters deal with specific security applications: retail, cargo, computer, and institutional. Special security threats, such as burglary and robbery, bomb threats, and terrorism, also are examined. Finally, the limits, problems, and future prospects of the profession are discussed.
