This text provides prospective and experienced investigators and attorneys with information to enable them to understand and deal with investigation of the theft of automobiles and other vehicles such as motorcycles, boats, trailers, construction and farm equipment, recreation vehicles, and bicycles.
Abstract
The placement and role of vehicle identification numbers are explained, as are sources of information about them. A discussion of methods used by vehicle thieves covers the operation of the individual thief, theft rings, the 'chop shop,' and salvage operators. Investigative techniques and procedures are detailed, including the restoration of obliterated serial numbers, searches of the crime scene, and the use of the crime laboratory. Interview and interrogation methods and guidelines for use by investigators before and during court appearances as witnesses are also given.
