These city drug abuse indicator trend reports presented at the 15th Community Epidemiology Work Group meeting each cover drug abuse trends and patterns in 1 of 18 U.S. metropolitan cities for 1983.
Abstract
The cities covered are Newark, N.J.; New York City; Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia; Buffalo, N.Y.; Detroit; Chicago; St. Louis; New Orleans; Miami; Dallas; Phoenix, Ariz.; San Diego, Calif.; Los Angeles; San Francisco; Minneapolis; and Denver. Heroin use is particularly high in several cities in the New York City-Washington, D.C., corridor, and the abuse of talwin in combination with pyribenzamine has decreased. Other opiates are gaining popularity as substitutes for heroin, notably dilaudid, demerol, percodan, and codeine. Cocaine is being increasingly used among all socioeconomic levels, being readily available with increasing purity and decreasing prices. Stimulants such as ritalin and preludin are being used as less expensive alternatives to cocaine. Five cities report the availability and popularity of LSD, and PCP has reemerged as a popular drug in seven cities. Marijuana continues to be widely available throughout the country. Methaqualone is decreasing on the streets, due in part to the manufacturer's decision to cease pharmaceutical production of the drug. Tabular data accompany the presentations.
