The guidelines are based on the procedures used in the mediation program in Houston. The methods used to train mediators and the forms and procedures used in the Houston program are also presented. Guidelines on the mediation process explain the mediation model, seating arrangements, introductory statements, initial statements, information gathering, problem identification, methods for generating options, and the written agreement. Other issues discussed are the evaluation of the mediation, listening and communication techniques, methods for handling conflict, how mediators can recognize and deal with their own prejudices, and referrals.
