A major thrust of the efforts of the Governor's Task Force To Reduce Drunk Driving has been to reduce the number of traffic fatalities among persons 15-24 years old caused by driving while intoxicated (DWI). Data are presented to show the achievement of this objective between 1985 and 1986. Ten public awareness programs targeting this age group are summarized. Tables show the total DWI fatalities and injuries for 1981-86 and the percentage and absolute number of such fatalities and injuries involving persons aged 15-24 and 15-19. Data on DWI arrests for 1981-86 show the effects of a hard-line law enforcement approach to DWI. Indiana law, sponsored by the task force, requires a police officer who has made a DWI arrest to forward a 'probable cause' affidavit through the local court to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, which administratively suspends driving privileges until further order from the court. Data are presented to show each county court's performance in such case processing. The report also summarizes independent studies that have evaluated the impact of the DWI programs. Data cover DWI fatalities and injuries by month for 1981-86. Task force projects currently underway are listed. 5 tables and 1 figure.
