Compared with the first 9 months of 1985, crime Index offenses increased 9.2 percent. Violent crimes decreased only in Maui County, and property offenses increased in all counties. There was a 42.3-percent increase in murders, a 19.2-percent increase in aggravated assaults, a 5.7-percent increase in robbery, and a .8-percent decrease in rape. Burglaries increased 18.3 percent, motor vehicle theft increased 10.5 percent, and larceny-theft increased 18.3 percent. Between 1976 and 1985, the State saw an overall increase of 31 percent in crime rates. Clearance rates over this period remained stable, ranging between 57 and 64 percent.
