This paper discusses the principles and uses of the interdisciplinary team in the treatment of child neglect cases.
Abstract
Such teams provide a means for accurately assessing and treating cases and ensure multiagency commitment in treatment. Multidisciplinary teams may include pediatricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, teachers, and social workers. Teams may participate in diagnosis, treatment, consultation, and professional training. Operating in connection with Baltimore City's child protective services, a 14-member child neglect team fulfills these functions. Cases are brought to the team's attention by social workers or supervisors. The team meets monthly for 2 hours during which all members review previous cases and provide feedback. This is followed by the presentation of a new case. Two cases illustrate the team's contributions to the management of a mentally disturbed neglectful mother and an alcoholic single father.
