Chapters written by experts discuss attitudes and beliefs about rape, rape investigation, medical aspects of rape investigation, and the prosecution of rape.
Abstract
Three chapters on attitudes and beliefs about rape consider public, police, and rape victim attitudes about rape. Nine chapters on rape investigation issues and techniques address concepts of physical evidence in sexual assault investigations, the collection and processing of physical evidence, and personality profiling for unknown offenders. Chapters on the latter topic consider the purpose and procedures of offender profiling. A separate chapter considers the investigative behavioral analysis of child molesters. Other chapters on rape investigation focus on the personality assessment of known suspects to facilitate effective interrogation, the identification and handling of false allegations of rape, and how rape investigators can cope with the stress of their job. One chapter provides guidelines for the medical examination and therapy for rape victims as well as the maintenance of medical records on such victims. The concluding two chapters advise prosecutors on trial preparation and tactics for rape cases, with particular attention to the use of expert testimony on rape trauma syndrome.
