The major dimensions are the characteristics of the facility; the client population served; and the program and its degree of contact and supervision, obligations, investments and amenities, philosophy, auspices, and conditions of participation. In addition, dispositions can be grouped into five sets: (1) juvenile institutions such as training schools and secure facilities; (2) medical/psychiatric hospitals; (3) other traditional placements, such as foster homes, ranches, and camps; (4) community-based programs, such as group homes, counseling, and social services; and (5) new alternatives such as wilderness programs, restitution, and community service. These dimensions provide a framework for distinguishing among dispositions, refining existing dispositions, and designing new systems. 14 references.
