Violent crime is examined from philosophical, law enforcement, judicial, and mass media perspectives. Part 1 includes discussion of the State's monopoly of violence, new developments in terrorism, the state of violent crime in other Western European countries and the United States, domestic violence, child protection, and intervention in family violence. Considerations are presented of the problems of the West German system in dealing with family violence, victim protection, and counseling. Major recommendations for improvements in these areas are made. Recommendations in other areas suggest minor modifications to law and procedure. Part 2 of the volume provides papers and discussions during working groups. These include discussions of the violence faced by police, violence in organized crime syndicates (primarily internal), victimology, and violence in the media. Laws to protect youth from exposure to violent videos are discussed at length. Notes and references.
