To increase dialog and communication between investigators and field personnel, the Dallas Police Department (Texas) created a followup feedback form for investigators to send arresting officers.
Abstract
The pilot program was initiated in 1985 and used for 3 months in the northwest division. The form is a routing slip to the arresting officer, informing the officer of the status of each arrest and of the results of the investigation. Field officers and investigators filled out questionnaires evaluating the form. It was found informative by 100 percent of the 130 field officers. Information on the form would be useful to 90 percent of the field officers; 80 percent said that it would increase communication with investigators. Of the patrol respondents, 95 percent wanted the program expanded to all divisions. Of the investigators, 100 percent said that they could fill out the form easily; 65 percent stated that the form did increase the amount of communication. Only 18 percent believed that the form increased the amount of recognition for the work investigators do. However, all who returned the questionnaire asked that the form be expanded to all divisions. The form is to be monitored for an additional 3-month period. Appendix of the two questionnaires and the routing slip.
