Out of the 1,071 offenders, 541 were randomly selected and followed by means of official and public register systems to determine their criminal justice contacts until the end of August 1983. The recidivism rate was 12.8 percent, with the rapists most likely to recommit sexual crimes. Incest and the sexual exploitation of a minor were the offenses least likely to be recommitted. Most of the repeat offenders had only a single repeat offense, either of the same type of offense as the one initially committed or one less severe. Only a small percentage committed more than one new offense. A large number had committed crimes other than sexual offenses, some prior to their first conviction for a sexual offense and some subsequent to the first sexual offense.
