A BEHAVIORAL ASSESSMENT SCALE DEVELOPED FOR USE IN A LONGITUDINAL FOLLOW-UP STUDY OF RELEASED OFFENDERS.
Abstract
THIS PAPER DESCRIBES AN INSTRUMENT WHICH FOCUSES ON THE BEHAVIOR OF THE RELEASED OFFENDER IN THE COMMUNITY AS AN INDEX TO HIS ADJUSTMENT. 'THE INSTRUMENT WAS CONSTRUCTED TO DERIVE FROM THE DATA BEHAVIORAL PREDICTORS THAT DISCRIMINATE BETWEEN LAW VIOLATORS OR RECIDIVISTS, AND NON-LAW VIOLATORS OR NON-RECIDIVISTS ON A CONTINUUM OF SUCCESS OR FAILURE'. THE DATA UTILIZED IN THIS STUDY WAS DERIVED FROM INTERVIEWS, OVER A THREE YEAR PERIOD, WITH 216 MALE FELONY OFFENDERS RELEASED FROM DRAPER CORRECTIONAL CENTER, ELMORE ALABAMA. THE AUTHORS CONCLUDE THAT THE MALADAPTIVE BEHAVIOR RECORD 'HAS BEEN SHOWN TO BE A HIGHLY PREDICTIVE DEVICE FOR LAW-VIOLATING AND CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR, BOTH IN TERMS OF OVERALL SCORE AND THE INDIVIDUAL ITEMS. THE INSTRUMENT EXCEEDS PSYCHOMETRIC STANDARDS WITH REGARD TO CONSISTENCY, RELIABILITY, INTERRELATIONSHIPS, AND OTHER STATISTICAL MATTERS. ADDITIONALLY, IT PROVIDES A BROAD-RANGE FOUNDATION FOR BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTION BY SPECIFYING THE AREAS IN WHICH INTERVENTION IS NEEDED'. APPENDED MATERIAL INCLUDES A CLIENT DATA FORM AND INTERVIEW QUESTIONNAIRE. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
