This text provides an overview of drug abuse and guidelines for managing it in the workplace.
Abstract
The financial and health costs associated with employee drug abuse are discussed, as are its implications for occupational safety. Following a description of the major drug schedules (I-V) of the Controlled Substances Acts of 1969, the major categories of abused drugs are described, including narcotics, depressants, stimulants, hallucinogens, cannabis, inhalants, and look-alikes. Legal and illicit uses of these drugs, method of use (eg., ingestion, injection), slang names, and other information are presented; photographs of drug paraphanalia are provided. Issues to be considered in formulating a company drug policy are discussed, including underlying philosophy, standards of conduct, job performance-drug abuse relationship, employee rehabilitation policy, and penalties for violations of company policy. A sample drug policy is included. Means for detecting employee drug abuse are then discussed, including preemployment screening, psychological testing, polygraph and stress evaluator testing, urine testing, searches and inspections, and undercover investigations. Physical and psychological signs of drug abuse also are listed. Index.
