Specific areas examined include litigation involving domestic violence, rape, economic rights, and child custody and support; the professional acceptance and opportunity of female attorneys; and women's representation and gender-based conduct toward female employees within the unified court system. In all these areas, it was found that sex discrimination against women is a pervasive problem with adverse consequences. Women often are denied equal justice, treatment, and opportunity. Cultural stereotypes of women's role in marriage and society daily distort the courts' application of substantive law. Women uniquely and disproportionately endure a climate of condescension, hostility, and indifference. Factors within the courts that have an adverse impact on women are identified, and recommendations for improving this situation are made.
