The Connecticut Department of Corrections came into existence in 1968. The Department houses about 5,700 inmates in 15 facilities; contracts an additional 235 beds in halfway houses; and provides a variety of contract reentry services. The Department also provides parole supervision and supervised home release. The State's maximum security facility, housing about 1,400 inmates, offers a variety of services, including vocational and educational training, addiction and counseling services, an inmate newspaper, and prison industries. Specialized programs include materials for the blind, family visiting, and a sex offender program. The minimum security facility houses about 600 inmates in dormitories and also offers a variety of programs and services. The Manson Youth Institution offers educational, life management, addiction, and recreational programs. Specialized programs in the State's facility for women include legal workshops, a parent-child coordinator and a child visitation program, keypunch training, and nontraditional job training (plumbing, electrical maintenance, machine shop).
