Data came from personal interviews with major individuals, a review of the relevant legislation, and observation of a mediation conference in Auckland. For each location, the discussion includes a review of (1) divorce and family law, (2) development and provision of mediation counseling, (3) procedures and processes used in mediation, (4) research and evaluation on mediation, and (5) emerging issues and trends. In all four locations, the evolution of mediation counseling as a means of dispute resolution in the family court systems appears to be associated with the move toward implementation or formulation of no-fault divorce legislation. It also reflects societal views that disputing divorcing families require support. Each locale's program has some unique features. The four locales are also at different stages in the evolution of their mediation models. Table and 28 references.
