This article examines the nature and scope of the international sexual trafficking in children, summarizes efforts to combat the problem, and recommends additional strategies.
Abstract
Based on reports and investigations received and conducted by the Defense for Children International, the international sexual trafficking in children is conservatively estimated to be a $5 billion business. The numerous sophisticated, international child trafficking networks are becoming more commercialized with the probable involvement of organized crime groups in several nations. Efforts to fight the problem are focusing on the enactment of legislation to target child pornography and other forms of child sexual abuse. Strong enforcement of existing international treaties addressing the issue is required. Finally, a clearinghouse should be established to identify producers and distributors of child pornography. 1 note.
