Twenty-five papers discuss issues pertaining to crime causes, crime prevention, juvenile crime, and drug law enforcement.
Abstract
The papers present contrasting views or differing emphases on the issues. Four papers on crime causes focus on how socioeconomic inequality affects criminal behavior, how biology affects criminal behavior, social factors as the cause of criminal behavior, and social factors as no excuse for criminal behavior. Six papers under the crime prevention rubric present gun control pro and con arguments. The discussions cover the Firearms Owners' Protection Act, the sufficiency of the self-defense argument for gun ownership, and whether gun control is a violation of constitutional rights. Four papers pertaining to juvenile justice present differing views on the effectiveness of wilderness camps for juvenile delinquents. Four other papers consider case delay and inadequate resources as threats to the juvenile court system and opposing arguments for rehabilitation and deterrence as the principal goals of the juvenile justice system. Seven papers on drug law enforcement address supply and demand issues, with attention to issues in employee drug testing. 42-item bibliography and volume and cumulative indexes.
