Part I outlines recent crime trends, with attention to notable aspects of some offenses, including those committed by members of Boryokudan, an organized crime group that commits violent offenses. Part II describes crime trends and offender characteristics in Japan's affluent society. Part III describes offender treatment activities at the stages of prosecution, court proceedings, and corrections, both in institutional and noninstitutional settings. Part IV addresses crime trends and offender treatment for juveniles. There has been an overall increase in crime in Japan in recent years, particularly in property offenses, heinous crimes, and drug offenses, although the crime rate is still relatively low compared to other countries. Crime is on the increase in spite of Japan's growing affluence, prompting this study to focus on the criminogenic influences in an affluent society.
