Recidivism rates were compared for 932 male juvenile delinquents and status offenders returned to a Wisconsin training school after their first release.
Abstract
The sample, derived from 1965 and 1967 correctional files, was followed for 10 years. Of the total sample, 80 percent had subsequent contact with police, and 63 percent were eventually returned to a training school. Of status offenders, about 33 percent were returned to training school after their first release, and 90 percent of the returning offenses were for delinquent offenses. Further, 38 percent of status offenders, and 42 percent of delinquents were subsequently convicted of an adult felony offense. Overall, results do not support the assumption that very few status offenders become delinquents or continue into adult criminal careers. 10 tables, 5 notes, and 16 references.
