The FBI's role includes building an intelligence base to aid prosecution and prevent terrorist acts and effective and timely investigation of terrorist acts. While there has been a decline in domestic terrorism, and indictments and convictions have been obtained against a wide range of groups, left- and right-wing extremists continue to cause concern. International groups, especially Iranian and Libyan, pose a threat to Americans, both at home and abroad. As part of the national response to terrorism, the FBI has established a unit to work with other Government agencies in contingency planning and in the formulation and implementation of investigative strategies. Other liaison channels have been developed to ensure agency coordination and cooperation in major metropolitan areas, and efforts are underway to facilitate increased antiterrorist information dissemination to local and State enforcement officers.
