This represents an increase of 24.3 percent over 1984, and may reflect, in part, specific training seminars on law enforcement submission on this crime. As in previous years (since 1981), a majority of assaults occurred on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and a majority occurred between 6:00 PM and 2:00 AM. Of all assaults, 3,231 (25.5 percent) were aggravated assaults. In 1985, 84.8 percent of victims were female, and 60.5 percent were white. Of all cases reported, 52.5 percent were cleared: 19 percent were cleared by arrest, and 33.5 percent were exceptionally cleared (i.e., police were prevented from making an arrest, most frequently as a result of the victim's refusal to cooperate).
