During 1985, 12,658 spousal assaults were reported to Maryland State Police by 129 police agencies.
Abstract
This represents an increase of 24.3 percent over 1984, and may reflect, in part, specific training seminars on law enforcement submission on this crime. As in previous years (since 1981), a majority of assaults occurred on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and a majority occurred between 6:00 PM and 2:00 AM. Of all assaults, 3,231 (25.5 percent) were aggravated assaults. In 1985, 84.8 percent of victims were female, and 60.5 percent were white. Of all cases reported, 52.5 percent were cleared: 19 percent were cleared by arrest, and 33.5 percent were exceptionally cleared (i.e., police were prevented from making an arrest, most frequently as a result of the victim's refusal to cooperate). In all years 1981-1985, the Baltimore and the Washington metropolitan regions showed the greatest number of spousal assault reports. Tables.
