The literature review focused on 50 books, articles, and pamphlets on rape prevention written over the past 15 years, and it yielded 408 strategies for combating sexual assault. Questionnaires were administered to volunteer respondents who included 43 women and 44 men recruited through a university newspaper advertisement, 44 women in support groups for parents of young children, 45 women university alumnae, and 43 sexual assault experts of both genders. The survey added another 732 strategies for countering rape. The unifying typology developed distinguishes whether the action is undertaken by an individual or society; whether it aims at preventing, preparing for, or coping with an assault once underway; and the intended effect of the action. The typology can help improve the study of strategy effectiveness by ensuring the precision and comparability of strategies.
