This article describes a diagnostic scheme for chemical dependence among police officers.
Abstract
The scheme was first used experimentally in an outpatient, chemical dependence program in Foster City, Calif. Diagnostic screening involves a physical examination; psychiatric evaluation; laboratory tests; psychometric, social functioning, and chemical dependency tests; and clinical impressions. Findings are summarized for the patient at the conclusion of the evaluation. The evaluation allows patients to remain in a familiar setting without interrupting their education or earning potential. Based on the evaluation findings, individualized therapeutic recommendations are made. They may include psychotherapy referral; medical referral; alcohol/drug education; alcohol/drug counseling; attendance at Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, or Narcotics Anonymous; chemical testing; couple or family therapy; vocational counseling; and assertiveness training. Other treatment modes include collateral assessment, nutritional assessment, exercise programs, stress management, Alanon, Alateen, or Alatot referral. 2 references.
